How to log into Direct Express account online (step-by-step)

You can log into your Direct Express account online to check your balance, view account activity, and transfer funds.

If you have a user ID and a password:

  • Go to the Direct Express website. Have your Direct Express card ready.
  • You will be asked to select the starting number of your card. There are two options: cards starting with “533248” and cards starting with “511563”. 
  • Click on “Proceed to Login”. 
  • Enter the user ID and password that you have selected when you first signed up for the card. 
  • Once you have successfully entered your user ID and password, you will be logged in to your account. 

If you forgot your user ID or your password:

  • Go to the Direct Express website. Have your Direct Express card ready.
  • Select your card number and click on “Proceed to Login”.
  • Click on the “Forgot Your User ID” or “Forgot Your Password” button. 
  • You will be asked to provide your Direct Express card number to verify your identity. 
  • After a few minutes, your user ID or password will be sent to you by email. 
  • Proceed to log in as above.

If this is your first time logging into your Direct Express account online:

  • Go to the Direct Express website. Have your Direct Express card ready.
  • Select your card number and click on “Proceed to Login”.
  • For cards starting with “533248”, click the “Create New User” button and follow the instructions on the screen. For cards starting with “511563”, go to the “Activate/Register Card” section, type in your card number, and click the “Activate/Register” button. 
  • As a new user, you will be required to enter your card information and provide your social security number and email address. 
  • Once you have registered, you will be able to choose your user ID and password.
  • Proceed to log in as above. 

How to see if the Direct Express website is down

The Direct Express website may occasionally be down and inaccessible to customers. Here are the steps to follow if you think the Direct Express website is down: 

  • Make sure that the website is indeed down. If you are accessing the site through your computer, try to switch to your smartphone or tablet to log in. If you are accessing the site through your smartphone or tablet, then switch to your computer. If you still cannot access the site, the website is most probably down. 
  • Use the Direct Express app. When the Direct Express website is down, you will often still be able to use the mobile app.
  • Check Direct Express Twitter and Facebook pages. This is often the quickest way to confirm that the site is down and get more information on when it will be up and running. 
  • Call Direct Express customer service at (888) 741-1115 to find out if there are any issues with the Direct Express website. They will also be able to tell you how long you will have to wait until you can access the website again. Keep in mind that getting through to customer service may take more time than usual, as many customers may be having the same issue.

Why isn’t my Direct Express card working?

If your Direct Express card is not working, one of the following may be the case: 

  • Your card has expired. Check the expiration date written on the front of your Direct Express card. If your card has expired, you need to call customer service and they will send you a new card. You will not be able to use your Direct Express card until you receive and activate the new one.
  • Direct Express believes that there has been a suspicious or fraudulent transaction on your debit card and has temporarily blocked transactions. You need to call the customer service to unblock your card. If you fail to contact them, Direct Express may cancel your card as a precaution. In this case, you will have to ask for a replacement card. 

How to access and use the Direct Express app

To download the Direct Express mobile app, you must have a smartphone. Two different apps are available for iPhones and Androids depending on the starting number of your card:

If you have an iPhone and your card starts with “533248”, download the app from the App Store here. For cards beginning with “511563”, you can download the app here.

The Direct Express app is free.

To log in to the Direct Express mobile app, you will be asked to follow the same steps as when logging into your account through the Direct Express website.  

With the Direct Express app, you can check your balance and recent transactions, set up low balance and deposit alerts, find in-network ATMs, and earn chances to win at PayPerks. 

Why don’t I see any pending deposits?

Payments on your Direct Express account are generally posted at midnight on your payment day. You will not be able to use the money until the payment has been deposited on your account. 

If you don’t see any pending deposits, the paying agency might have canceled or rolled back the deposit. In this case, it will not post to the account. Contact your paying agency directly for more information.
